Did You Get To Play Anything Cool At Gen Con?

Oo Mission Accomplished from the lovely guy who does Party of One podcast. They had a great session of that on One Shot

From this side of the pond I think we’re looking at a bit higher than that  But… one day…

It’s brutal. This was my third consecutive year in attendance and I only made it out because to fancy friends of mine treated me to it for my 40th birthday. It’s just such a huge sink hole for my resources, it makes it really difficult to commit to annual attendance.

That said, it’s a great con and I get something a little different out of it each year. Without trying to sound trite or melodramatic, each year it shows me a different face. And I love that about Gen Con. In the early 2000s I went to SDCC three times in a five year span I think. This was before the Marvel movies took off and really changed everything, though the tenor of the show was already in flux when I started attending. Every year that I went I felt like I was having a regurgitation of the previous year’s experience. It was a copy of a copy of a copy. Very quickly it became not worth the time, money and effort.

But Gen Con is always new and exciting. This year I went in and I wasn’t even super jazzed for new releases or anything. Yet I ended up have a poignant trip, seeing new things and learning.

It was a ton of fun. Jeff said, on Twitter, that one of our people had one of his favorite Fun Facts for the game: “Dating Mission Control”

This was my first GenCon. I ran Masks: Apocalypse Sonata twice and Zombie World twice. Both were great experiences with tables full of super-fun players. As far as playing games, I played For the Queen (my first time, even though I own the game). No surprise, its awesome. I also got to play Tales from the Loop, which was also great. These were both Indie Games On Demand offerings.

Hi Mikel_Matthews!

I’m interested in knowing more about your Cortex Prime Deadwood-inspired Western.

Using Smallville, it was incredibly easy to do. Just draw up a relationship map to make the characters. The powers are easy to ignore and making western style Distinctions was pretty simple.

So you kept it close to the source material without going into Wierd West territory?

So it was more or less Smallville… did you add any additional traits or make changes on the default use for them?

Yep…not a weird west. The characters weren’t directly from Deadwood. we had a Sheriff, a Homesteader, a Saloon Keeper, a Thief, and a Cattle Baron.

I went ahead and used the standard array of Values, as I recall. Just renamed some Distinctions.
