What are your favorite little known games?
I’m not sure if PSI*RUN (http://nightskygames.com/welcome/game/PsiRun) can be considered “little known”. But it’s one of my favorites for sure.
I love the mechanics, and how collaboration is baked into the system. I’ve yet to find another game where this is merged in such an elegant way. Also I always enjoy how different the story can develop, and how much can be built from this quite simple pretense: You’re running away from this strange organization, you’ve lost your memory, you have powers, you have those questions you seek answers to.
I’ve run and played this a couple of times, and this game just totally works for me.
The Japanese RPG Witch Quest seems to be almost entirely overlooked even if there’s a free English fan translation available.
Play heartwarming stories about young witches and their cats!
Roll dice!
Use magic!
Make Tarot readings!
Dress up!
Well, the last bit isn’t strictly speaking in the rules, but if you were to play a 13yo witch or her cat, wouldn’t you dress the part?
It hasn’t been published, I’m afraid. I’ll ask around the other participants to see if they’re interested in sharing
Vincent Baker’s incomplete Freebooters of Venus is amazing. I’ve used components of that game so many times in hacks and custom moves. Played it as much as was possible a couple times with our own ideas plugging the holes.
I just recently got to know Girl Underground and it’s amazing (thus is actually how I learned about this forum, by talking to the designers)
Not sure how little known they are but Follow, Kingdom, and Microscope are EXCELLENT GMless, Diceless, Character Sheet-less games by Lame Mage productions. Fantastic for hammering out interesting stories in a span of a few hours, and microscope is excellent for collective setting creation and worldbuilding.
I started a game of Freebooting Venus a while ago, and the first session was a lot of fun. Have you described or explained anywhere how and where you “plugged the holes”, and what version you played? It’s a fascinating little game.
Rewind: Temporal tales has supported some really great games for me
We played both versions. Both are mostly usable games as they are.
I haven’t written anything up. It was mostly flying by the seat of our pants and just coming up with custom moves or altering existing moves where it felt needed. It was years ago. Unfortunately, I’m not able to recall any specifics at the moment. I do remember writing up the details of some of the spells that were named but not fleshed out.
I’ve been looking to order Black Seven soon. Also another one called “White Lies”, and also “The Queen’s Men”. Black Seven also sounds like it would lend itself to a Mission Impossible (original series) styled game.
This is a pretty great OSR game for One-shots!
