What to run for friends who want to "learn how to play D&D"?

I’d go either Black Hack or Dungeon World - Dungeon World to me is more D&D than most editions of D&D…

For me, WoDU doesn’t feel very D&Dish. It feels more weird fantasy, mainly because of the wizard summoning spirits rather than casting big flashy Vancian spells.

From my point of view, your friends asked for something quite specific. saying we know better sounds better for us, but you could be breakeing the trust needed for them to remain in the hobby.

The same trust you’d be using when saying “I have a cool game we can try, will you join me?”

So I’d be wary of breaking a social contract in their first game experience.

I’ve introduced groups to D&D several times using a lighter-weight, older D&D… when they’re emboldened they’ll buy whatever the current edition is, get super pumped about that version, and fly the nest.
