Since the site was ported this week, I’ve noticed that the blue “unread” dots don’t appear in the posts anymore. This includes posts made since the port. Hopefully this can be fixed?
Blue Dot Not Appearing Since Site Ported
FWIW this works for me as it did before so it’s not an universal problem.
Interesting. I only see the blue dots in the lists of topics, not when you open a topic and have new replies.
Seems to be working fine for me.
Works here as well. Maybe something changed in your browser config?
Most likely we’re all talking about different things. @Christo, can you post a sample screenshot with “dot should be here” drawn over?
Just for clarification: Do you mean this kind of blue dot:
I’m using Firefox here, maybe it’s a browser thing?
No, Sabine, not that kind of blue dot. I mean once you’ve clicked a topic it used to show the blue dots near the timestamp (e.g. 6d) to indicate ‘hey, you haven’t read this reply to the topic yet.’ Then while the dot is on your screen it will gradually fade because you have had the reply on your screen long enough to read it.
I don’t pay attention to the dot but it did exist, true. I’ll see if it’s still there when I get next notification. Fading out still happens to me.
I can see the dots on the desktop version, but I see no dots in mobile either. Has anyone else tried to reproduce this in a mobile browser and/or can anyone else confirm that it was working before on mobile?
I’m in my mobile using Chrome and don’t see the dots. Have not tested on desktop.
Interesting… out of curiosity, I also tried checking a few other Discourse-powered forums (Waypoint, Discourse Meta) and I’m not seeing any blue dots for unread posts there either. I can’t be sure as to the version of the forum software those sites are running, but we’re currently on the latest version as we did upgrade as part of the migration.
I’ll keep looking into this and maybe see if I can restore locally on an older version to see if it’s a hidden change in the newest build.
Ok, now I see the blue dots on my tablet, but not my phone. Both are Android devices.
So I checked and mobile gets a different stylesheet than desktop. Desktop has .read-state class visible (and color set to blue with SVG circle inside), mobile doesn’t. That’s why you’re not seeing it on mobile. I don’t have tablet to test it on so I don’t know what styles are loaded there but it’s probably desktop, that’s why you see blue dot there. It’s not resolution dependent as developer tools on desktop with low res emulation still get desktop stylesheets served. Site owners can probably overwrite it but given how tight everything is on mobile, I don’t think there’s space for that.
For reference desktop:
and mobile:
Based on the code history it’s been like this at least since July 2014.
Thanks for doing the research. So strange: I could have sworn it did it in mobile.
