Fear of a Black Dragon: Give Us Suggestions!

@Coalhada and I are always on the hunt for new modules and setting books to cover on the award-winning Fear of a Black Dragon podcast. We’d love to hear your recommendations for things to play and cover. We are looking for two things:

OSR or old-school fantasy modules
This is our bread and butter. Classic modules, OSR modules, or things from the SWORD DREAM movement are all welcome suggestions.

Classic modules for non-fantasy RPGs
We have covered The Arasaka Brainworm, a definitive module for Cyberpunk 2020, and The Secret of Castronegro, which, while not necessarily definitive, is certainly a classic for Call of Cthulhu. We would like similar suggestions. Tell us the module and the game it goes with

Thanks for your help!

This is long shot, but it might be interesting to look at Tomb of the Serpent King. . It’s a very beloved and popular short module, and it’s often recommended as a “introduction to OSR” kind of adventure, both for GMs and players (although mostly for players). Personally, I’m not a huge fan (I don’t think this is how people should be introduced to the OSR), but I’d be very interested in your opinions.

Some stuff I like:

  • The totally bonkers Silent Titans just came out and I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on playing it.
  • Jacob Hurst’s island hex crawl Hot Spring Islands is really good.
  • Pearce Shea’s horror game In the Woods, which might be one of the best things the OSR has done.
  • Patrick Stuart’s Deep Carbon Observatory seems like something you should have done already!

I can probably keep going forever so I’ll stop here.

We have DCO lined up, probably in the next episode or 3.

An OSR deep cut could be Faux Pas by Anxy and Nick. (Zedeck’s review.)

I’ll second Ultan’s Door - both issues.

I’ll second all of @funkaoshi’s recommendations, but especially Silent Titans and Hot Springs.

Speaking of islands, I would also add A Thousand Thousand Islands, though it’s very hard to get a hold of at the moment.

‘Apple Lane’ or ‘Balastors Barracks’ for RQ 1 (or 2? … just from a loooooong time ago …).

I second Apple Lane or Snakepipe Hollow.

Actually the classic Pavis or Big Rubble sets for RQ would be amazing.

For non-fantasy, from Top Secret Operation: Sprechenhaltestelle - Code Name: Pisces or Operation: Orient Express.

Or Gamma World’s Famine at Far-Go or Legion of Gold.

I also really like Vincent Baker’s The Seclusium of Orphone of the Three Visions

I’m just starting my listen to FoaBD but - have you done either of Emmy Allen’s awesome procedural pointcrawls? They are:

  • The Stygian Library and
  • The Gardens of Ynn

Each procedurally creates a unique pointcrawl experience for a dangerous, unique, and evocative environment.

We did The Gardens of Ynn

I honestly don’t recall if it was any good, but 7th-grade me really really really wants to hear y’all do the Isle of Dread. Bonus points if you review the edition that came in the D&D Expert “blue box”.

Seconding Isle of Dread as well as The Lost City. Both have different strengths - Isle was an introduction to hex crawling for the first D&D Expert set, while Lost City was a masterclass in factions. Lost City is especially interesting because the factions and background narrative/motivations are especially good, the fictional set up has strong pulp overtones, but maps and ecologies are fairly weak, with trapped passages that NPCs who know about the traps routinely travel through without ever disarming, and single points of access from one level to the next, despite the fact that various factions apparently use them.

I’d also recommend two Judge’s Guild products I rave about a lot: City State of the Invincible Overlord and Caverns of Thracia. CSIO is less of a generic setting town and more of a human dungeon that you are stuck living in, and Thracia is just a beautiful dungeon design with an interesting ecology, factions, etc.

More recently, I’ll second so much of the above, but give a shout out to Zzarchov’s Price of Evil (like Dunnsmouth, a beautifully crafted procedurally generated location) and Evlyn’s Spinetooth Oasis (another excellent use of factions).

Isle of Dread would be cool since its such a gateway to Mystara and the Known World setting.
