Frequently Asked Question (or maybe just Questions?)

Hi, I have a question: What does the “Flag” thing do? Does this send a message to mods or admins to flag content that may be critical? Or is this like a bookmark?

Weird. For testing purposes, I decided to flag this post, and learned that yes, it was a message to the mods.

When trying to send it, I received the message that I had reached the maximum number of new topics a new user can create and that I should wait 42 minutes. Does flagging count as “Creating a topic”?

You are correct, that flagging a post will send a notification to the moderators. If a post is flagged 3 times it will automatically be hidden from general view. Moderators can take action on flagged posts whether that’s to message the user, delete the post, or make it visible again (if say multiple people flagged the post).

This forum is based on trust levels. As you interact more you gain more trust, and with more trust you can do more stuff. By design newer users are rate limited on how many posts they can make, this is to help keep the “join and spam” content to a minimum. Flagging does not count as “Creating a topic”.

Thank you!

I was just surprised that flagging would trigger a “no new topic for you, padawan user” notification. I understand and support the idea that you have to earn trust before you can spam away merrily.

Is there a way to denote pronouns? I tried adding (he/him) to my user name, and the system balked at that. Did I miss some way to show that?

Trying to tag @shane. Oh, you have your pronouns showing as a popup next to your name… interesting.

Yeah. I put them in the Full Name section on my profile.

@darren you create tags on the topic. As far as I know you can’t create them for replies.

I think there might be a trust level requirement (or possibly mod requirement) for creating tags…

Tags will definitely be something mods will be asked to curate. In theory over time they may point us towards new (sub)category creation.

You need TL3 in order to create new tags. (Either that or Admin privs.)

How do Trust Levels work? I realize that they restrict the things you can do (and I totally agree with that policy) - what I don’t know is how you can level up? And what would it mean if I did? I tried to use the search function, but it just lead me here …

So there is an article here, https://blog.discourse.org/2018/06/understanding-discourse-trust-levels/, which explains the trust levels.

But in summary to get from level 1 to level 2 you need to:

  • Visiting at least 15 days, not sequentially
  • Casting at least 1 like
  • Receiving at least 1 like
  • Replying to at least 3 different topics
  • Entering at least 20 topics
  • Reading at least 100 posts
  • Spend a total of 60 minutes reading posts

Just reached TL1, and it says that give me the ability to edit the Wiki. Is there a Wiki?

Not at the moment. I think we will want to think a bit about what we would want to do with it.

A Wiki might be great for all those “How Tos” and GMing advice, tools of the trade for specific games, etc.

Looks like it doesn’t create a new site or anything, it just makes the individual post editable by others: https://meta.discourse.org/t/what-is-a-wiki-post/30801

Cool! So a Resources category could have the items I was talking about as subcats or topics, and they would be edited by the TL3+ community on an ongoing basis. It’s not I expected when I saw Wiki, but it actually makes parts of the Forum a Wiki. Cool!

Definitely a possibility. I am going to hold off on creating any more categories for a while I think. I want that to happen more naturally. But if it looks like there would be utility in something like a Resources category I could see that happening.

I’d like to add a link to the rpg site I run and post when a new podcast comes out.

Is that acceptable? If so where would be best to post?

How would someone control which categories or subcategories you see messages for? For example, if there is a category that a person doesn’t want to see or get new message alerts for?
