Girl Underground: Curiouser and Curiouser

Girl Underground: Curiouser and Curiouser
Three sessions on Mondays in December, 7:30pm ET

Travel to a wondrous world. Meet strange companions. Complete a quest. And find your way back home! But you won’t be quite the same when you return, will you?

This is a three-part series of Girl Underground. The game is a PbtA game inspired by media like Alice in Wonderland, Labyrinth, and Spirited Away. Players share the role of the adventurous Girl and also play as her loyal (but strange) Companions on the journey.

Sessions will take place over Streamyard. Being able to attend each session of this three-shot is ideal but not required. You must RSVP to each session you wish to attend. One slot is reserved for a special guest. Sessions will be recorded and posted to Youtube if all players agree.

Aiming for a story of fantastical exploration and self-discovery, rated PG. The X-Card, Open Door Policy, and Lines and Veils will be in use. This event abides by the Gauntlet Community Code of Conduct.

Interesting… this sounds exactly like Heroine, a game I have, and have played, by Josh Jordan… but it isn’t PbtA? Is this a more recent rewrite of it into a different rules system?

It must be a case of convergent evolution. Girl Underground is an original game by Jesse Ross and Lauren MacManamon. It’s very good!

Interesting… Heroine and the settings book, is described almost word for word like that. The playing of the companions, returning as a changed person, etc.

Now I’m really interested in which came first.

I don’t think I’ve ever found a more laser focused game than Girl Underground. While I doubt the implied general setting / motif is totally original for an rpg, the themed moves makes the game hum.

This game even had me thinking about what gender norms me and my family were consciously and unconsciously supporting, and is it holding back my kids. It’s remarkable.

Heroine predates Girl Underground by like five years, published 2013.

That makes sense, as I played Heroine three if not four years ago. I need to look at Girl Underground and compare it to Heroine now.

Thanks.

The first session was great! I really enjoyed “meeting” Kat, Druthi, Lumba, and Capt. Awesome! I am really forward to the rest of the sessions.
