Gold Nuggets from the Ghost of Gaming’s Past

So over the course of my weekend at Emeralds City Comic Con I’ve decided raid the Alexandria RPG Library for interesting and useful tidbits from older games. You can find my observations here:

But now I’m curious: for those of you with access to some old or less well known (or regarded) games, what one tid-bit would you share from their rules material to encourage modern game designers?

And please, only soft burns in this thread.

The original Villains and Vigilantes from 1979 has a rather amazing system for assigning stats for player characters. The idea is that you basically play yourself with superpowers, so the GM takes a look at you and just makes a guess at what your stats would be. Like: “Beth is always pretty smart so we’ll go with a high stat for that…”

So the game starts with a session where all players are evaluated by the GM.

Thinking about this now, it almost feels transgressive!
