New User Introduction
Thanks, that’s not at all disturbing!
Sorry! Didn’t mean to scare you!! I’m just always glad to see a new fan of PbtA.
I am GMT +8. Maybe that would work better for you. Let me know. Is anyone here GMT +8 or close?
Maybe some of the Australians? They’re about GMT+10, that might fit.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some PbtA games to appear in my time zone at some point!
By the way, I signed up as an $8 patron. Can anyone tell me if there’s anything more I need to do to get Slack access and RSVP priority? Thanks!
OK-- should be set up now.
Yep, looks good! Thanks!
In the same way there’s a ‘GMT-ish group’ there’s a solid Asia-Pacific group of Gauntleteers, too.
I love learning about where everybody’s coming from! Thanks @Radmad for starting the thread.
Hi, I’m Jason. I teach at the Center for Cartoon Studies by day, write and draw my own comics by night, and cram game-playing and game-making into every remaining non-family spare moment.
Started with white box D&D circa 1978, played a lot of different stuff through the 80s, fell out of gaming through my art school years, and then started playing a bit again about 10 years ago. In 2014, the one-two-three punch of Fiasco, Dungeon World, and DCC RPG cemented tabletop games as an essential part of my adult life. I was so inspired by these games that I started publishing my own stuff as Lampblack & Brimstone, and I now employ RPGs regularly in the classroom to provoke discussion of story structure, character motivation, and and the joys of improvisation. My next two publishing projects are @Jeremy_Strandberg’s Stonetop and the 2nd edition of Freebooters on the Frontier, my personal take on old-school-meets-PbtA.
The fine folks behind The Gauntlet have created a wonderful community here and, in the wake of the collapse of G+, I feel very grateful that this place exists.
Welcome!! Stonetop is absolutely my favorite draft RPG I have seen this year. I LOVE this concept! I have also enjoyed reading Inverse World but never gotten a chance to play it. Every player I know that runs Dungeon World often recommends Perilous Wilds. I hope to be one of them some day!
I actually discovered The Gauntlet because I was reading up on Freebooters. I found the Lampblack & Brimstone blog, your 2e actual plays, and a comment you made about the FotF2e thread. I immediately made my way here and within a week or so managed to play my first game with the community. So, thanks for that!
Hi all, I’m Matt (he/him) and I’m a librarian in Utah.
I’m designing a game called Crooked Paths. It’s a Forged in the Dark Game about mystical, psychedelic witches fighting a guerilla uprising against a colonial theocracy in a cursed land called Bloodacre. It’s inspired by mostly historical witchcraft traditions, myths, and stories rather than Gardnerian Wicca/current witch work, but I have read widely in contemporary occult currents and it’s definitely an influence. The setting is a mishmash of Balkan, Spanish, Scandinavian, British Isles, and Slavic traditions, but I am imagining alternate settings based on West African or Japanese ideas of witchcraft as future possibilities. I’m sure you’ll see more about it, because one big reason I’m checking out the Gauntlet is because it seems like a great community for designers. I’m hoping to have an alpha by around the end of Novemberish.
I started playing RPGs when I was 11 or 12, beginning with 2nd ed D&D and soon after, Rifts. I’m a big reader and collector of RPG material, but it’s been rare that I’ve been able to run games that aren’t D&D 5e (though I love my current Blades in the Dark campaign and I occasionally can get folks to play Fall of Magic). One day I want to partake in an epically long Ars Magica saga with the right group, but I have more hope for Mothership, or possibly getting my D&D group into OSR stuff, Dungeon World, or something similar. I’d love to play Burning Wheel or Trophy or like, many other games at some point in the future. Pretty soon though I’m hoping to be running a lot of Crooked Paths!
I’m on twitter @domesdaygames and I probably followed you like 2 weeks ago in a massive TTRPG following spree.
Hello everyone! I’m James. I formerly lurked at the Story Games forum and have now signed up to lurk here. (I use the same username everywhere.)
About four years ago I went from being someone who read hundreds of game rulebooks without ever actually playing, to someone who plays loads but doesn’t have quite enough time to read new games or reflect on gaming.
I now help run an open gaming club here in Edinburgh, Scotland which specialises in one-off games of indie and story rpgs. I therefore get lots of opportunities to try out new games, playtests, and ideas in real life! I have written and tested several games (some with feedback from users I recognise here!) but have yet to take the publishing plunge.
I’m also part of a private regular group for long-term indie games, which tend to take a more serious tone. I’ve previously played more traditional games quite extensively, but I’m having a phase of not being hugely interested by them right now.
I’m really looking forward to learning from you all and thinking more about gaming!
Welcome @empowermint! Which is the club in Edinburgh? I’m there from time to time and have dropped into a couple of gaming groups on free evenings in the past, but neither of them quite fits your description.
Hi @Toby, I’m pleased to meet you!
We organise via Meetup https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/Edinburgh-Indie-Roleplayers/ and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/1806504806280605/ It would be great to play with you if you’re in Edinburgh when we’re meeting!
Hi there! My name’s Sean, and ever since Google+ and Story Games shut down I’ve been kinda adrift, looking for a community to rekindle my passion for RPGs and design. It’s been a tough year, and I’ve hit a bit of a creative slump.
About myself: I’m the author/creator/whatever of Uncharted Worlds, and I’ve done a bit of freelance writing for Green Ronin. My day-job/career is animator for videogames (Rainbow 6, Assassin’s Creed, For Honor, and more recently [Redacted]).
I’m currently working on Uncharted Worlds, 2nd Edition. I learned a LOT from the first one, so I’m eager to apply those design lessons to refining my game. I wrote a big post-mortem about it, I suppose I’ll eventually repost it here.
Thanks for having me, and I hope to overcome my various social hang-ups and be able to contribute
@seangomes I ran Uncharted Worlds every other week for a few months a while back. It had some issues But your post-mortem analysis a few months back was spot on! I also really appreciated your open discussions on your designs. I would be happy to play test version 2.0 when development gets that far!
