Great to meet ya, I feel like I’ve seen your username around. GiantITP forums?
New User Introduction
I do have a username on GitP, though it’s been a couple of years since I posted there.
Hello, my name is Yi (brushmen). I’m not a financial supporter of the Gauntlet (so only as a new user to the forum and the calendar system ), but will try to contribute to the community in a positive way when I’m able. I use tRPG primarily as a form of therapy (speech, improv, socialization), but maybe also as a structured activity to meet new people who may share similar interests and storytelling styles. I dabble in art (not as much anymore after being diagnosed with Keratoconus), hobby-level translation, and hobby-level programming (mainly Javascript nowadays). I made a few browser-based playaids (to screenshare with other players), and have begun experimenting with limited server-client style playaids to try to streamline online play procedures.
Thank you for making a gaming space for story-games. And thanks to the kind folks who have played with me and provided helpful feedback.
Hi, my name is Chris. I am a language professional (EFL teacher, editor, language researcher, etc.) I started playing RPGs in 1979. I started with OD&D and moved quickly to 1E, then just as quickly to Runequest 2E. I played in a four year campaign, playing every weeknight for two hours and every Saturday and Sunday for 4 hours a piece. We were young and had lot’s of time. I also ran a longish Pendragon campaign for a few years. After everyone scattered for university we didn’t play again.
I played a very short campaign of VtM in the 90s. But nothing else for thirty years.
I got back into RPGs and story games about three years ago. But it’s been dribs and drabs. I like to play in my own games, but usually I am facilitating language-learning students playing RPGs as a language learning/use exercise (it’s still fun though). I’m a langauge teacher.
Personally, my favourite games are Ghost/Echo, A thousand years under the sun, House of Reeds, and Archipelago, but my students love my homebrews of Pocket Danger Patrol.
At the moment, I am very interested in combining LEGO and roleplaying, and LEGO and Braunsteins. I’m also very interested in boardgames that have story and roleplaying elements, like Near and Far.
I am mostly on the lookout for games that work well with kids (playing in their second language). There aren’t that many.
Welcome to the Forums @brushmen. Enjoy yourself here and hope to bump into you in a calendar game.
Welcome to the Forums @Hopeless_Wanderer. Your starting point sounds a lot like me … AD&D, then RQ … Happy days.
@Alun_R I’ve been here a few months already, but thanks for the welcome.
Yes, I have fond memories of the time because of Runequest/Glorantha, even though the rest of my life wasn’t that great. When I heard that Greg Stafford died, I realized that he was one of the five or so people who dramatically changed my life. His gifts to me were innumerable, yet I never met him.
p.s. This kind of welcoming thread was one of my favourite things about Story-Games. I am glad there is one here too.
Welcome! Have you ever hear of Magicians - Language Learning rpg?
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/111896/Magicians-Language-Learning-RPG
It is specifically focused on Korean (and I think he was using it to teach English before he switched the magic words to Korean. I am very curious on what a language teacher would say about it.
I also have been pondering Legos meets rpgs for the last year. the limitation I keep coming to is that by building a thing during gameplay to solve a conflict, the rpg grinds to a halt. Perhaps, we could crowdsource a solution.
@Deckard In principle, it’s a great idea, but I looked at the sample on DTRPG and the table of contents says the book is over 200 pp. That’s a non-starter. One to four pages is an appropriate length for my intended use, perhaps, a bit longer.
Hi everyone!
I’m Richard Moser (he/him). I’m 46 years old and have been playing TTRPGs for over 30 years. I started off in Red Box D&D and went through most of the mainstream classics (Champions, Paranoia, Vampire, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, TORG), mostly with a stable group through my teens and early 20s. I’ve always felt a little out of sync with the people I’ve played with, as they are mostly playing for reasons very different from mine. I’m 100% on board with the play-to-see-what-happens approach, and like-minded people are just too hard to find around here for someone in my circles.
I’ve taught community college for the last 20 years (literature and composition), and got my MA in literature, with a thesis focused on (ahem) “the transformation of space, place, language, and social relationships in secular eschatological literature”–which is a complicated way of saying I’m fascinated by what happens when everything falls apart and the social contract is broken. I have a strong interest in theater as well (a play I co-wrote was in the last Hollywood Fringe Festival). I say all this not by way of bragging (much), but rather to send up a flare about my particular interests/preoccupations. Feel free to contact me if you want to talk about secular eschatology, OuLiPo, Jose Saramago, cognitive neuroscience, or why The Good Place is the best show ever to be on television.
I just signed up as a Hangouts Friends and look forward to engaging with the community, both inside and outside of games.
Hi everyone,
I’m Anne, I’m in my 30s, I work in a library. I write a gaming blog with the same username I have here.
Recently I’ve mostly been playing DCC. I’ve enjoyed 5e and I2TO and Numenera. I’m interested to try Troika sometime. I have very limited PbtA experience, so I’m not sure how often I’ll see things to respond to on here.
I started coming to the Gauntlet forums because a couple posts I wrote talking about maps got linked here, by some other nice people who also wanted to talk about maps. Those two posts are now among my most viewed, so I thought I should return the favor by coming to say hi.
These forums are most definitely not only for PbtA discussions. Indie/Story/OSR games I think tend to be the main thrust. If there are things you’d like to discuss outside of PbtA you definitely should feel free to do so! Some of our most popular posts have been focused on not-PbtA stuff:
@diyanddragons I have seen your blog sporadically. It’s got pretty decent google search placement I guess I enjoyed it the few times I read it.
Never did one of these.
I’m Gus, I used to write the Dungeon of Signs blog, and now sporadically write a dungeon crawl theory essays blog titled All Dead Generations. I’m cantankerous, and refuse to use the term OSR to describe a playstyle or system. I’m a middle aged professional living in a major urban center on the Western shore of the United States.
I’ve played a lot of B/X, OD&D and AD&D from 1983 to 1991 or so and now from 2011 - present, mostly on G+. I’m currently running a 5E game.
Hi! I’m Toby, a 30something Brit who moved abroad a couple of years ago. I used to do a fair amount of roleplaying, especially GMing PbtA in recent years, but language barriers have made it much trickier after the move. That’s how I ended up here.
At the same time, I’ve become increasingly interested in design philosophy and criticism of the games I used to play a lot, which is where my brain naturally goes anyway if left unchecked, so I’m starting to think that the Gauntlet might be a good fit for me, being full of apparently friendly and thoughtful folks.
I’d love to get involved in the hangouts scene, but the time zones seem forbidding. I’m in UTC+1/+2. I have a young child and a demanding day job, so 3am gaming sessions are an absolute no-no. Could anyone who’s been around here a while let me know if there are ever any games at Europe-friendly times? If not, I would be more than happy to help set some up, but I gather there are pretty strict limits on what newcomers can do until they’ve played some existing games first. I hope that doesn’t become a catch-22.
I should also say that I’m super impressed by the sophistication and slickness of the forum software that’s used here. Kudos!
Welcome, Toby! The good news is that there are quite a lot of Europeans in the Gauntlet Community, so there are definitely games that aren’t starting at 3 am UTC.
On the Hangouts page, there is an “All Event Info” button that lets you sort games by date - all starting times are given in the time zone you’re currently at, so maybe that helps a bit?
Thanks Sabine! And thanks to a couple of other kind folks who pointed me in the same direction. It certainly looks promising. I’m looking forward to getting involved.
Welcome @Toby,. Hope to bump into you in a GMT-adjacent session.
Check out Gauntlet Con 2019 when the schedule is published towards the end of Sept. It starts Thu 24th Oct and runs to the end of Sunday. I’m in the UK and down to run sessions starting at 7pm (BST/GMT+1) on the Thu, Fri & Sat evenings and a Sunday session starting after lunch.
As @SabineV5 says there’s plenty of European company on the Gauntlet.
