Running "The Gardens of Ynn" by Emmy Allen

Hi y’all, I’ll be running “The Gardens of Ynn” using Macchiato Monsters (starting next week). This module is really imaginative and genre-bending, but it seems like a challenge to manage as a GM. I’ve already had some conversations about running it on the Slack, but I thought I’d ask here for further advice. Points that were covered on the Slack:

  1. The tables in the module are hard to use because they’re not very well laid out (spread across multiple pages, not hyperlinked, etc.)
  2. The descriptions of the table contents are hard to use because they aren’t alphabetized.
  3. One possible solution (covered on Fear of a Black Dragon) is to curate a handful of selections from the book and build an adventure around that, instead of using the on-the-fly random generation the text suggests.
  4. Another possible solution is to use a web interface for the tables.
  5. There are also some better laid out versions of the tables that are WIP in the community.
  6. Finally there is also a spreadsheet version available that can be used with the Google Sheets random sort function.

If anyone else has tips about running this module I’d love to hear them!

Side note

I made up new starting equipment tables for Macchiato Monsters for my game. They combine a Napoleonic-era European setting theme (for where the PCs originate from) with some Ynnian influences to the magic items. Obviously these are really specific to my game, but maybe they’ll be of use to someone else out there!

I chose the Napoleonic era for the characters’ origin because the brasspunky, art nouveau, romantic aspects of The Gardens would seem like a strange far future marvel to them, but they are still less separated from those ideas and styles than medieval or renaissance characters would be. Equipment from the early 1800s is also not so separated from the renaissance-era stuff that’s standard in Macchiato Monsters, so it won’t break the game.

Here is a PDF with a few of the tables that I’ve been working on reformatting:

Gardens of Ynn Tables

All of the page numbers refer to the original pages in the book.

A couple of notes:

  • I swapped a couple of the high value Events entries to make the layout fit better.
  • I tweaked and tried to create more consistency with some of the language, most notably I removed references to “Depth” in favor of “Current Layer”.
  • I condensed a few of the Encounter entries to fit in the table, like “Chess Set” and “Animal Servants”.

I ran a session of Ynn using Into The Odd earlier this year and had a great time. I generated everything on the fly and didn’t have any problems. There was a little break in the flow of the game as I figured out what the next location was but it didn’t seem to be a problem.

Someone on the Slack linked to Inspiration Pad Pro and files for rolling for Mutant Year Zero. I started to reformat Gardens of Ynn in the Inspiration Pad format but got burnt out fixing line-breaks and such. These new resources should make it a breeze!

The module seems like a great space to explore but I wonder what sort of plots people layer on top to keep it exciting.

Cool! As far as keeping it interesting goes, one suggestion in the Fear of a Black Dragon episode was to have the party revisit the Gardens at different points in a campaign instead of doing it all in one go. I think that could help, especially if the Idea of Thorns escapes the Gardens.

David Schirduan has another really slick Ynn generator tool at https://technicalgrimoire.com/ynngenerator
