ZineQuest Hype Thread

My Kickstarter, Ancestry and Culture: An Alternative To Race in 5e is live and funded! If you’ve ever cringed at the racial essentialism of violent orcs and graceful elves, or wished you had mechanics to play the child of an orc and an elf, or a gnome raised by dwarves, then this may be for you.

Check it out maybe? Thanks!

Hi! I wanna promote THE SKØVD CHRONICLES, my Weird Gothic rogueish city-crawl, 32-pages of system neutral SWORD DREAM fun! It’s an expansion of a Pamphlet released last year: https://wolf-eel-games.itch.io/skvd

I got some good artists on board, like Jeremy Duncan and Acid Lich (more art to drop sometime soon)

Draculola Roleplaying Game - Zine Quest 2 is a cute, spooky small rpg for kids.
They can play little monsters, like vampires, and attempt to make their world a little bit better. The whole approach and style reminds me of “The Little Vampire” (Der kleine Vampir) which is a series I loves as a kid.

Well, and if you are a VtM fan like me, it might be a good game to play vampire with kids, without getting them into the whole World of Darkness.
I did back the project and recommend it

H-okay! I actually have a page for this thing now - it goes live Friday. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/maenad/climbing-the-witchs-tower/

At the top of the Tower lives the Witch. They have knowledge, power, wealth, beauty, and respect… and that’s exactly what YOU want. Join a company of companions, each seeking something different from the Witch, each convinced that they’re the one who will safely navigate the Tower as others fall by the wayside. Each of you has your own relationship with the Witch, and will be compelled by their Tower in unique ways.

Climbing the Witch’s Tower is heavily inspired by fairytales like Kate Crackernuts, musicals like Into the Woods, and games like Bluebeard’s Bride. It is rife with tarot imagery and dark fairytale aesthetic.

The Witch is Waiting.

My ZineQuest Kickstarter keeps growing, so now backers get a TON of content for just $5. New rules! NPCs! Pregens! Two original adventures! A second zine of essays! Amazing pro art with diverse new characters! It’s embarrassing how much we’re packing into this.

And because we’ve hit stretch goals, we’ve also been able to hire a developmental editor, Daniel Kwan (of Asians Represent), and a sensitivity reader, Pam Punzalan (of Play Without Apology) ! Check it out!

Oh I was super annoyed at myself that I saw this one too late to back it! I love poetry games / game poems / things that are somewhere between poetry and games! Will you have any spare copies for sale once they backers copies are out in the world?

Yeah, once the backers’ copies are sent out, I’ll be putting some up on Itchio. I haven’t set our page up yet or I’d link to it.

Backed! I was arguing with a racist today on Quora about this exact point! Why, oh. Oh, did I reply to that @$$!

Thank you for publishing this!

Hey Everyone!

So we have less than 24 hours to go on The Love Balloon and it looks like we’re probably not going to b e funded since we’re about $500 short! I think I probably set the funding goal too high to begin with, but alas it feels strange creating a quirky little RPG project in line with Zine Quest’s principles and crashing so brilliantly!

In any case, here’s my last ditch effort to promote the project! If you like humor, hijinks, romance, and/or GMless style games and retro 80’s generation tables, please give it a look! I promise you’ll have a blast and it was made with the best intentions of this community in mind.

Here’s the direct link:

Thank you!

Oh I’m delighted to hear this!

Well, I’m not delighted to hear that you had to deal with a racist. I’m sorry to hear that. But I am glad to hear you’ve backed and I hope the zine contains resources for people to address racism in their roleplaying games.

@eugenemarshall Indeed! That a$$hat was arguing that there are three races in the world. The thing is that online there is a nearly infinite number of sites that support this pseudoscience that is mostly pre-1950 (even excluding the hate sites pretending to be scientific or intellectual), and l that it is damned frustrating!

It is just nice to support someone that understands race for what it is (primarily a social construct) AND puts this concept forth in games AND helps others create MORE intriguing character backgrounds at the same time!

My first Kickstarter is live! It’s just a little set of three RPGs with weird mechanics, but they’re my weird RPGs.

  • Do you like weird, experimental mechanics in RPGs?
  • Would you get a kick out of an RPG based on a software development management methodology?
  • Do you often feel like you’re slowly losing your grip on emotional stability?
  • Have you ever struggled to maintain the veneer of professionalism while really wanting to sleep with your coworkers?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you might like my RPG zine:

It’s the last three hours on the Night Reign kickstarter!

Night Reign is in the last three hours of its Kickstarter - it’s a stealth forward RPG released as part of ZineQuest and has a similar Dishonord-y vibe to Blades in the Dark, but more in line with the stealth and conspiracy aspects than the Peaky Blinders influenced criminal empire building. We’ve just unlocked an alternate setting inspired by The Mark of Kri, so now’s a great time to jump on board!

Thank you for the kind words!

Yes, there truly is a scientific consensus that there is no natural, biological determinant of race. And when people like that cite some study from 1921 and refuse to listen the real scientific and philosophical facts, they are simply displaying their racism. I talk a little about the issue in the zine, though I mostly rely on the words of others who have said it better than I could.

Boosting once more, since the campaign ends in 22 hours!

Thanks to our hitting so many stretch goals (and being over 2000% funded), I’m delighted to say we’ve been able to bring on two sensitivity readers and a professional editor!

The two sensitivity readers are Daniel Kwan, of the ENnie nominated podcast Asians Represent! and designer of the Ross’ Rifles PbtA RPG, and Pam Punzalan, editor of Girls Got Game and Play Without Apology.

The editor is Hannah Rose, who writes and edits for D&D, including Critical Role’s Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount and Descent into Avernus, will be editing our zine! The campaign ends Saturday at noon eastern!

“Have you ever wanted to play novel, mixed heritage characters, like the child of a dwarf & an elf, or an orc raised by gnomes? Perhaps you want to replace the problematic concept of race with something else? Now you can!”

I launched my first Kickstarter, Darker Malleus. It’s a game of tragic horror designed for 3-4 hours one-shot scenarios about a band of doomed hunters on a journey to root out evil while contending with the corrosive influence of their own Hatred.

It features the grim pencil work of Felix Miall and will be edited by Fiona Maeve Geist.

This was such a good project! So glad it funded!

Alexi actually inspired me earlier this month to dust off a project that had been sitting around too long and needed to get updates, expanded and launched. So I put Beard & Beyond on KS on the 25th! We funded in about 2 hours and have grown past a number of stretch goals! We have a digital platform we love approach us about licensing some IP from us which is crazy!

It’s a very hairy RPG about the adventures beard folks get up to in a place called “The Whiskerverse”

Find it on KS here Beards & Beyond

Trophaeum is a series of classics-inspired adventures for use with Trophy Dark, or any OSR system.

The Zine:

Trophaeum will be about 24 pages, single color, saddle-stitched, at the standard half-page zine size. It will be published through Risolve Studio, an ethically sourced and sustainable printing press that uses soy-based ink. It will include the following:

  • Pictland: You play as centurions, sent north of Hadrian’s Wall to find the lost eagle of the Ninth Century, Hispania. Picts and the highland forest meet you at every turn, drawing you deeper and deeper into the heath and heather, hungry for red Roman Blood.
  • Out of Crete: You are the second group of unwilling youth Minos sacrifices to the Minotaur, seven years after the first band left Athens. Deep in Daedalus’ labyrinth, who will survive? Can you escape the bull and flee the island?
  • An expanded list of rituals, occupations, and backgrounds
  • 36 Reminders of Rome: Rome weighs heavy on the minds of all who leave her. Whether Rome is an ideal, a conqueror, or one’s home, it’s hard to escape the lure of the Empire.
  • 36 Deities to Whom You Pray: Your home has been Rome, but perhaps not always. There are gods that walk in your hearth, some that have been passed down womb to tomb, the gods of bootstraps and bright swords, the gods of the glacier, the gods of bone.
  • Six interior illustrations.
